and more software questions- for mac users.

Mon Jun 29, 2009, 5:34 AM
I'm setting up my little cousin's Bamboo for his birthday but the problem is, they're running an archaic mac, which I know nothing about. My preferred programs do not run on macs (paint tool SAI and Opencanvas) and I need to find something:
-downloadable,
-free,
-simple, (like I know artrage works on macs but he's 11 so he doesn't need all those bells & whistles yet)
-relatively small. (They have very little space on the computer.)

Do you guys know something that might work?
Thank you!

Well, being 11 myself :-P I would say give him Artrage. The other good painting programs available on the Mac (Painter, Photoshop) are even more complex, and you can explain to him which functions he needs and let him play with or ignore the rest. I've been professionally working with Photoshop for many years now and still don't know most of the things it does. So what? There's "undo" if you happen on the wrong button. Just teach him to save often! He'll probably surprise you and know more about painting with Artrage in a year than you do now. Better a good program than some cheap shit that will destroy his interest in digital art for ever. If you want your child to learn the violin, you won't buy him one that sounds awful, wouldn't you?

Well I got a bamboo and it automatically came with Photoshop Elements for PC and Mac - so if you're getting it new, you don't have to worry, but if you're getting it used, then gimp is your best bet for sure.

here. Scream into this.

The Gimp is the best bet, since that's what I started on. Similar enough to photoshop that it's an easy learning curve, and it's free. ;)

gimp is a safe bet (despite the name being ridiculous)

It does all the things you would want it to be able to do and it is quite user friendly....

I hope it goes well! :D
