Artist's Comments

week who-even-knows
our assignment was to re-do an assignment. better. Well, this was not received very well, but I worked really hard on it so I thought I would share. I'm starting to get a bit discouraged about this class; every week I think I've finally hit somewhere close and then...ugh.
I'm categorizing this as traditional because I spent more time on the traditional parts than the color, and that's the only way I can make this category system make sense to me.
Based on a character from slavic folklore- the Vodyanoi. He lives in mill ponds and drowns arrogant men and keeps their souls in teacups. Theoretically you shouldn't have to know that to read this.

4 pages- brush and ink and digital color and days of my life. Obviously the last page is unfinished but i don't have the energy any more haha

<EDIT> wow. I was absolutely shocked to see my DD on this. wow. First of all, I want to thank you guys for the support you've given me particularly with this piece, which was not one of my favourites. I was shocked to have been featured because I see everything that's wrong with this comic instead of the things that went well, so thank you for reminding me.

There is a reoccurring comment I feel like I should adress, though. People have been jumping on my teacher, classmates, and even artschool as the instigators of this horrible critique that left me broken. Guys, while I appreciate your sympathy, THIS IS NOT THE CASE. I have one of the most saught-after teachers in the school right now, and I am learning a STUPID amount. seriously. I wouldn't trade any of his negative critiques for the WORLD. He is not mean, he is the kindest man alive, and he knows how to say the things that need to be said. I was bummed when I posted this because I had the midsemester what-am-I-doing-here blues, and while your reaction then made me feel a lot better, I want to make sure you know that Shanth is one of the three best teachers I have ever had. As for art school, this kind of comment has been getting to me. There are INFINITE opinions on the validity of art school, of the education, if it's worth it. I have only one opinion. Going to RISD is the best choice I have ever made. It may not be right for you, but I truly believe in art education.

Other than that (hahaha) THANK YOU again. I'm honored that you guys want to read this.

Vodyanoi comic by ~toerning Strange, curious but more than anything, stylish and amazing. (Suggested by *CottonConfection and Featured by ^Thiefoworld)

This is really great. Sorry to hear it wasn't well received in your class.
:iconmotorfish:
It's brilliant actually. You have an incredibly cinematic eye. This moves completely thoroughly and fluidly in MY head at least.

I honestly think it looks phenomenal. Your brushstrokes, and your storytelling - it's just wonderful. I'm Russian so vodyanoi are part of the mythos I grew up with, but I never knew the part about teacups. :)

Is there anything more beautiful than a beautiful, beautiful flamingo, flying across in front of a beautiful sunset? And he's carrying a beautiful rose in his beak, and also he's carrying a very beautiful painting with his feet. And also, you're drunk.

I don't care if it has been not well received...I find it very beautiful!

This is a very good work, you must be proud of it...also if has not been appreciated in your class :)
:iconashwara:
Now I'm curious what your class had to say about it.

I really like your inks though. you've got a lot of control I think. I also like your generally-simple faces!

Blowing your stack adds to air pollution.

eh just that you couldn't read it. My teacher does this thing where he, on purpose, reads like the stupidest person alive. Like he doesn't try to get it at all. And I understand and I'm grateful but at the same time...I don't think it's that much of a stretch. But he just didn't get the story.

oh also THANK YOU. I'm not quite sold on the simple faces thing but it was really fun to draw....

I think it's great! Please, don't let yourself be discouraged by any snotty teachers or students. The whole point of art is to communicate- and I didn't have any problems understanding, and appreciating, your story. And as always, your artwork is lovely.
